ABOUT THIS TRIP:
We camp during the 6th full moon of 2008. Our final day is the winter solstice, which occurs at exactly midnight on June 21st. The night of the full moon and dawn are why we're excited. It's during these times we plan to photograph and video something that has never been recorded at Markawasi. As many of you who have already seen the Xpeditions TV program about Markawasi know, this is a fascinating place. At some point long ago figures, faces and zoomorphic shapes were created in stone. These are spread across several square mile throughout the plateau's surface. Many of these are only visible during dawn and day of the summer or winter equinox. Not every figure has been recorded. In fact, on our way up the mountain - if you have a good telephoto (>700mm) - I'll point out the numerous faces on cliff sides just at the rim of the plateau. I know for certain these have never been documented. To make this amazing feat of artistic skill even more astonishing, some of these shapes are only viewable during a full moon! And, this has never been documented! How would I know this? One night during a full moon I noticed a distinct face gazing toward the western horizon. As I examined this face it was obvious the features were only visible because of moon light and shadow. Curious, I started looking around the plateau for others faces and figures. In a short time I had found many. After many inqueries it was obvious no one has ever noticed this. I returned to these locations during the next day. Though it was a sunny day, there was no trace of these figures or faces to be found!I asked our guide about this. If anyone would know it would be him. He has lived his entire life here. He smiled as he shook his head "No, I have not seen this." A few minutes later he added, "There are many secrets Markawasi holds... many more to be revealed."
During this trip we attempt to photograph and video document the ghosts of Markawasi and the numerous anomilies we encounter. As usual, we will freely share this with the world. Knowledge is power...

Day
2 The journey to Markawasi is an adventure in itself. The bus ride takes about 4 hours. During the last 2.5 hours we travel into the western slope of the Andes. Before we arrive to San Pedro de Casta we will have climbed 10,000 feet. The road is steep and unpaved with severe drop-offs. The view is one of primitive grandeur. In no time, the forested valley floor is replaced with towering mountains shrouded with clouds and mist. Our ride ends at the remote village of San Pedro de Casta, just below the Markawasi Plateau. Once we arrive our supplies are loaded onto burros. We are provided horses and continue onward. The camp is 8 miles further, taking about 2 to 2.5 hours. The view is beyond description. Once camp has been established we'll spend the afternoon wandering the plateau. Tonight is the full moon and the perfect time to capture images. As we walk the area I will point out the areas of interest. |

Day 3 After dinner (after dark) we can wander beyond camp. Because of the full moon, we can easily navigate the areas nearby. During 2006 I was set up above camp and had decided to videotape the full moon. I unexpectedly recorded UFO's passing overhead. If you have seen the video at Xpeditions TV you already know what I'm referring to. Seeing UFO's and other strange (supernatural) phenomena are commonplace here. Magical Blend Magazine published a story about events I experienced here during 1997. This story spanned 3 issues of their magazine (Jan thru March 2000) and is available within our website as well. If you're interested find the link at the top of this page (Markawasi). |

4 He is not the first to suggest this. According to information we've uncovered, Dr. Russo also felt this way. And perhaps they, and others, are correct. Psychics and remote viewers around the world have "seen" these chambers and passageways. I recently visited with a good friend who is remarkably talented at "seeing". She provided specific instructions to find a cave entrance where she believes a passageway can be accessed. I'm curious if she's correct... You're invited to join me if interested. Recently the stone figures of Markawasi were analyzed by Dr. Robert Shock, the same man who dated the stones used in the pyramids of Egypt. He determined these stone work and figures are much older then those of Egypt. Of course we have no doubt this is a remarkably ancient site. Every face, every figure, every perfect cut into stone that is only visible during specific hours out of a year... They were artisans with skills beyond any who have lived since. Who they were, why this was created and what eventually happened to them are part of the greater mystery of Markawasi and history itself. Incidentally, the rock I'm sitting on (to the right) was brought to this location and cemented in place. No one has ever been able to figure out what the formula for the cement is. You see, it is stronger than the stones it connects together and never wears. The drop off (to my left) is about a half mile... The south Pacific is barely visible at the horizon. Great place for a photo opportunity, huh! |

5
Night 5: see note below... Markawasi / San Pedro de Casta/ / Lima/ ? Sunrise is usually about 6am this near the equator. This is the optimum time to begin video documenting and photographing. For only a few minutes every year stark figures and faces appear, then vanish just as quickly. We will have decided on locations we know about to help you get that once in a lifetime footage or photo. By 10am the event has finished and we can begin to repack our things. The photo at the left was taken a few days before the 2006 equinox. Roll your cursor over the image and you can easily see the face of a young man in the shadow. Remarkably, Kathy & I saw something completely different the morning of the equinox. Instead of a human looking face we clearly saw something else.. and documenting this is one reason why we're going to be there this year. By midday our tents and gear have been repacked and ready for burro's. One by one, we hike down to San Pedro de Casta. I know it will feel very odd as you leave Markawasi behind yet, if you're like me, you're ready for a hot shower and a few creature comforts. We arrive back to Lima about 8pm. For some, the journey continues. Tomorrow we begin the next leg of our adventure as we head to the southern desert of coastal Peru. Details about "Secrets of the Sand" are here...
